What types of massage are available?
You can choose from any of the following types of massage and can even request to have elements from different types mixed together for a truly unique experience suited to your needs:
Relaxation Massage - a holistic whole body massage, using oils (which can be scented) to ease generally tight muscles and reduce the physical strains brought on by stress and anxiety. It can be performed with light pressure or deeper pressure to suit your own personal likes.
Deep Tissue - a focussed massage, using either lotion or oils (which can be scented) to ease tight muscles in a specific area of the body and reduce the physical strains brought on by stress and anxiety. It will usually be performed with deeper pressure but should not be painful.
Pregnancy Adapted Massage - a relaxing whole-body massage specially adapted for those who are pregnant, taking into account the changing pressures on the body, to ensure the safety of both mother and child. It uses gentle massage strokes to help alleviate the aches and tightness brought on by daily stresses.
Cancer Adapted Massage - a specifically adapted massage style designed for those who are undergoing, or who have recently undergone, treatment for cancer. It is performed with light pressure and can be done with or without oils to suit your preferences. It can be performed on any areas of the body you wish, with care taken to avoid sore or sensitive areas.
Lymphatic Drainage - unlike other massage types, Lymphatic Drainage does not focus on the muscles. Instead, it is specifically designed to stimulate the body’s lymphatic system. It is useful for assisting in the drainage of excess fluid retention in bodily tissue, especially post-surgery. It is performed with light pressure and without oils. It can be either be performed across the whole body or tailored to specific areas of the body as required.
Seated Head Massage - a massage of the head, face, neck, shoulders and upper back. Unlike the other massages offered, this one is performed whilst you are seated and can be done with or without oils (depending on your preferences). It can be relaxing or invigorating, so is just as good for waking you up during the day as it is for unwinding in the evening.
What should I expect from a massage session?
A Massage session will last between 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on what is desired.
If attending the Docherty Wellbeing clinic, you will be escorted to the treatment room where you will be shown where to get ready and told how to prepare yourself, as well as being asked to choose your desired lotion or oil (as necessary). After this you will be left alone whilst you prepare yourself accordingly. Your massage treatment will then be completed before you are left alone once more to get yourself ready to leave the clinic.
If having the massage at your home, the therapist will arrive with all necessary equipment. They will take a few moments to set up the table or seat, with sheets, pillows and towels as necessary. Once that is complete you will be told how to prepare yourself, as well as being asked to choose your desired lotion or oil (as necessary). After this you will be left alone whilst you prepare yourself accordingly. Your massage treatment will then be completed before you are left alone once more to get yourself ready before the therapist returns to the room to pack up and leave.
Some of the massages use oils, which can sometimes stain material, so the ideal way to have the massage is to be undressed (there will be towels available to cover you as necessary). However, if you wish to keep your underwear on, you are welcome to do so, but please wear something you don’t mind getting oil stains on. The general rule for the best massage experience possible is: Wear as little as possible, but enough to feel comfortable.
